About this time in 1990, Milli Vanilli, slap bracelets and L.A. Gear tennis shoes were all the rage, and moviegoing audiences were anticipating the release of Pretty Woman, starring an up and coming actress named Julia Roberts. This was also the year Adobe’s Photoshop was born.

Technology seemed so simple then. Students took typing courses on electric typewriters or computers the size of small refrigerators, and people still used film cameras. No one even thought about digital cameras (camera phones?!) or the internet. And, we certainly couldn’t fathom the idea of how quickly the idea of a “digital imaging software” called Photoshop would take off — allowing for logo creation and graphic design on tiny portable computers, the ability to enhance or alter images and video, and yes, the power to create flawless skin or surgically remove thunder thighs with a few strokes of the mouse.

It’s hard to believe it’s only been 25 years, during which time the software program has become so ubiquitous in our culture, it has become a verb — joining the ranks of “Google,” “Xerox,” “Superglue” and others.

To commemorate its 25th anniversary, Adobe challenged users to submit their own creations for its highlight reel. The resulting video is a kaleidoscope of colors underscored by Aerosmith’s “Dream On.” Join me in peeking behind the scenes to see how this fascinating technology works — making the “impossible possible” for creatives around the world.

“Dream On” indeed, Photoshoppers. We can’t wait to see what the next 25 years brings!
